Introduction

Planet Hulk is a Marvel Comics storyline that ran primarily through issues of The Incredible Hulk starting in 2006. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Carlo Pagulayan and Aaron Lopresti, it dealt with the Marvel heroes' decision to send the Hulk away from Earth, his acclimation to and conquest of the planet where he landed, and his efforts to return to Earth to take his revenge.

The story is widely regarded as one of the best Hulk stories ever, as well as one of the best comic stories of all time. It has been praised for its epic scope, compelling characters, emotional depth, political relevance, and stunning artwork. It has also been adapted into other media, including an animated film of the same name in 2010, as well as part of the live-action film Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.

Planet Hulk is not just a simple action-adventure story, though. It is also a complex and nuanced exploration of themes such as exile, identity, redemption, power, oppression, resistance, and heroism. It challenges the readers to question their assumptions and sympathies, and to reflect on their own values and choices. It also introduces a rich and diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations, personalities, and arcs.

Some of the main characters of Planet Hulk are:

  • Hulk: The protagonist of the story, also known as Bruce Banner, a scientist who was exposed to gamma radiation and became a green-skinned behemoth with incredible strength and rage. He is sent to Sakaar by the Illuminati, a group of superheroes who feared his destructive potential on Earth. On Sakaar, he is enslaved and forced to fight as a gladiator, but he soon becomes a leader of a rebellion against the Red King. He also falls in love with Caiera, a powerful warrior and the Red King's lieutenant.

  • Caiera: The love interest of Hulk, also known as Caiera the Oldstrong, a native of Sakaar who possesses the ability to manipulate the Old Power, a cosmic force that connects her to the planet. She is loyal to the Red King, who saved her from a massacre when she was young, but she gradually develops feelings for Hulk and joins his side. She becomes pregnant with his child, but dies in an explosion caused by the warp core of Hulk's ship.

  • The Warbound: The allies of Hulk, also known as his gladiator companions. They are a group of diverse aliens who share a bond of loyalty and friendship with Hulk. They include Korg, a rock-like Kronan; Miek, an insectoid Uniter; Elloe Kaifi, a rebellious aristocrat; Hiroim, a shadow priest; Brood, a parasitic insect; and No-Name, a female Brood. They follow Hulk in his quest to overthrow the Red King and later to return to Earth.

  • The Red King: The antagonist of the story, also known as Angmo-Asan II, the ruler of Sakaar. He is a cruel and tyrannical dictator who oppresses his people and forces them to worship him as a god. He is also a master of technology and bio-engineering, creating weapons and monsters to maintain his power. He sees Hulk as a threat to his rule and tries to kill him several times.

  • The Silver Surfer: A guest star of the story, also known as Norrin Radd, a former herald of Galactus who travels the cosmos on his surfboard. He is captured by the Red King and implanted with an obedience disk that forces him to fight in the gladiator arena. He meets Hulk and helps him break free from his disk, restoring his free will. He offers Hulk a chance to leave Sakaar with him, but Hulk refuses.

Exile

The story begins with Hulk being tricked by the Illuminati into boarding a spaceship that was supposed to take him to a peaceful planet where he could live in solitude. However, the ship malfunctions and enters a wormhole that transports him to Sakaar, a harsh and violent world where different races are constantly at war.

Hulk is captured by the Red King's forces and implanted with an obedience disk that prevents him from escaping or attacking his masters. He is sold as a slave and sent to the Maw, a brutal gladiator arena where he is forced to fight for the entertainment of the Red King and his subjects.

Gladiator

In the arena, Hulk meets his fellow gladiators: Korg, Miek, Elloe Kaifi, Hiroim, and Brood. They form a bond of friendship and loyalty, calling themselves the Warbound. They also encounter the Silver Surfer, who is also enslaved by the Red King. Together, they manage to defeat the Surfer and free him from his disk, which also disables the disks of all the other gladiators.

Hulk and his allies then lead a massive uprising against the Red King, storming his palace and confronting him in a final battle. Hulk defeats the Red King and spares his life, earning the respect and admiration of the people of Sakaar. He is hailed as the Sakaarson, the prophesied savior of the planet.

Emperor

Hulk becomes the new ruler of Sakaar, with Caiera as his queen and the Warbound as his council. He works to unite the different races and factions of the planet, and to rebuild the civilization that was destroyed by the Red King. He also learns that Caiera is pregnant with his child, giving him hope for a new future.

However, his happiness is short-lived, as his old spaceship, which was kept as a trophy in the palace, suddenly explodes, releasing a massive amount of radiation that kills millions of people, including Caiera. Hulk survives the blast, but is enraged and grief-stricken. He blames the Illuminati for sabotaging his ship and vows to return to Earth to take his revenge.

Warbound

Hulk and his remaining Warbound board a shuttle that was attached to his ship and use it to enter the wormhole that brought him to Sakaar. They arrive on Earth, landing in New York City. They are greeted by Iron Man, who tries to reason with Hulk, but is attacked by him. Hulk declares war on Earth and demands that the Illuminati face him in combat.

The story of Planet Hulk ends here, but it is continued in another comic series called World War Hulk, which shows how Hulk and his Warbound fight against the Earth's heroes and try to bring justice to those who wronged them.

Analysis

Planet Hulk is not just an entertaining and thrilling story, but also a meaningful and thought-provoking one. It explores several themes and concepts that are relevant to our own world and society, such as:

Exile, Identity, and Redemption

One of the main themes of Planet Hulk is how exile affects one's identity and sense of self. Hulk is exiled from Earth by those who fear him and do not understand him. He is rejected by his home and his friends, and forced to find a new place where he belongs. On Sakaar, he faces many challenges and hardships, but he also finds new opportunities and connections. He discovers new aspects of himself, such as his leadership skills, his compassion, his courage, and his love. He also finds redemption for his past mistakes and sins, by saving a world that was doomed by another tyrant.

Planet Hulk shows how exile can be both a curse and a blessing, depending on how one deals with it. It can be a source of pain and anger, but also a source of growth and transformation. It can make one lose their identity, but also help them find a new one. Power, Oppression, and Resistance

Another theme of Planet Hulk is how power, oppression, and resistance shape the lives and destinies of individuals and societies. Hulk is a victim of oppression, as he is exiled, enslaved, and exploited by those who have more power than him. He is also a symbol of resistance, as he fights against his oppressors and inspires others to do the same. He is also a wielder of power, as he becomes the ruler of Sakaar and has the ability to change the world for better or worse.

Planet Hulk shows how power can be used for good or evil, depending on who has it and how they use it. It also shows how oppression can breed resentment and violence, but also solidarity and courage. It also shows how resistance can be a force for liberation and justice, but also for revenge and destruction.

Heroism and Villainy

A final theme of Planet Hulk is how heroism and villainy are not always clear-cut and absolute, but rather relative and subjective. Hulk is both a hero and a villain, depending on the perspective and context. To the people of Sakaar, he is a hero who saved them from the Red King and brought them peace and prosperity. To the people of Earth, he is a villain who threatened them with his rage and power. To himself, he is both a hero and a villain, as he struggles with his inner demons and his moral dilemmas.

Planet Hulk shows how heroism and villainy are not defined by one's actions alone, but also by one's intentions, motivations, and consequences. It also shows how heroism and villainy are not fixed and static, but rather dynamic and changing. It also shows how heroism and villainy are not mutually exclusive, but rather coexist within each individual.

Adaptations

Planet Hulk has been adapted into other media forms, such as films and video games. Here are some of the most notable adaptations:

Planet Hulk (2010)

This is an animated film that was released direct-to-video in 2010. It follows the comic storyline closely, with some minor changes and omissions. It features the voice talents of Rick D. Wasserman as Hulk, Lisa Ann Beley as Caiera, Mark Hildreth as Red King, Kevin Michael Richardson as Korg, Sam Vincent as Miek, Liam O'Brien as Hiroim, Marc Worden as Iron Man, and Betty Gabriel as She-Hulk.

The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans, who praised its faithful adaptation of the comic, its action sequences, its voice acting, and its animation quality. It was nominated for two Annie Awards for Best Animated Video Production and Best Music in an Animated Feature Production.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

This is a live-action film that was released theatrically in 2017. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a series of films based on Marvel Comics characters. It stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, and Idris Elba as Heimdall. It was directed by Taika Waititi.

The film incorporates elements of Planet Hulk, but also deviates from it significantly. It focuses on Thor's quest to stop Hela, the goddess of death, from destroying his home world of Asgard. Along the way, he is captured by the Grandmaster, a cosmic being who rules over Sakaar and forces him to fight in his gladiator arena. There, he meets Hulk, who has been on Sakaar for two years and has become the Grandmaster's champion. He also meets Valkyrie, a former Asgardian warrior who works for the Grandmaster. Together, they escape from Sakaar and return to Asgard to face Hela.

The film received critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2017. It was praised for its humor, action, visuals, performances, and soundtrack. It was also nominated for several awards, including a BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects and a Saturn Award for Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture.

Conclusion

Planet Hulk is a comic series that deserves its reputation as one of the best Hulk stories ever. It is an epic and emotional saga that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of adventure, drama, romance, and tragedy. It is also a smart and insightful story that explores important themes and issues that resonate with our own world and society. It is also a story that has inspired and influenced other media forms, such as films and video games.

If you are looking for a comic series that will entertain you, move you, challenge you, and inspire you, look no further than Planet Hulk. You will not regret it.
